It was difficult to find similar companies that offer as much as General Mills does. However, since General Mills has such a wide array of products I believe that’s why most of their products ended up as cash cows. I think it’s important for General Mills to be looking at this information since it’s competitors have a much larger market share for certain products. It was shocking for me that the cereal was in the cash cow category because I thought it would’ve been a star. This tells us that General Mills could be spending less money on these products. The other categories are all in the Cash Cow quadrant. After looking at the BCG the snack products for General Mills is doing the best as it’s in the Stars quadrant. General Mills biggest competitors are Kellogg, Kraft Foods, Campbell Soup, and ConAgra. Since it was challenging finding matching competitors market shares for each of the categories for General Mills I split it up between a few. A few of their other well know brands are Betty Crocker, Yoplait, Häagen-Dazs, and Nature Valley. I was quiet surprised that their cereals wasn’t their number one market share since Cheerios is one of their most known products. Their snack products racked in 22% of their total market shares, and cereals following with 17%. When looking at the market share for General Mills their snack products and cereal products had the highest percentages. Their competitor, Kellogg, generated nearly $12.923 billion in net sales for the year 2017. In 2018 General Mills made $15.74 billion in net sales. For the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrix analysis we will be looking at their cereals, baking products, snacks, yogurts, and ice cream. One of General Mills top competitors is Kelloggs. They sell their products in over 100 different countries, but 64% of their sales comes from North America. General Mills is a food company with a wide array of different products.
